The truth
Here's a little fun fact. In December of 2004, the American Temperament Test Society, Inc. (ATTS) showed that 83.4% of American Pit Bull Terriers plus 93.2% of Staffordshire Bull Terriers, passed the temperament test. Compared to just the 81% being the average pass rate for all dog breeds. Dachshunds actually scored the lowest overall, yet we still think of them as cute little wiener dogs. The test isn't a direct measure of aggression, but is rather based on how the dog reacts in a situation, such as stranger coming towards the dog and handler in a threatening manner.
Unfortunately these dogs were first bred to show aggression towards other dogs. But since the mid 1900's, they have been bred to display friendliness towards humans and other animals. But they can still be protective over their territory. Though most Pit Bulls today will just lick the intruder to death.
This breed is not very well suited to be a guard dog because of their love for humans, even strangers. But generally, whatever the OWNER trains them to be, that's what they will become. A Pit Bull has to be trained, or come from a bad life, in order to be aggressive. No dog is born dangerous. Think about it, would you not be mean to humans if the only ones you've ever known, beat you and fought you.
The dogs of this breed and many of the others, will more than likely allow strangers into your yard or home without a second thought. Even if the owner is not present. But this breed has been proven to have excellent judgement and will only react during a real threat. And since this breed is not really an attack or guard breed, training them to do so can ruin them if not done properly. It can make them untrusting of humans and might cause them to misjudge and attack a human when unnecessary.
Instead of this breed being aggressive and dangerous, many people (who know the truth of the breed) say that they can have "Pit Fits". Pit Fits are the special, silly way that pit bulls will play. The way that, out of no where, they just start running all around the house. The way they lie on their backs with their head off the couch and cheeks flared open. These dogs are all just rambunctious clowns, and can sometimes be too much to handle for some people. But for others, they are perfect.
